Getting good motorcycle insurance rates can be a tricky business as there are many associated risks that come along with riding a motorcycle. Like with auto insurance, there are a number of factors that are taken into consideration when working out premiums.

Some of these factors would be the age of the rider, how experienced the rider is, the type of motorcycle and estimated market value. If the rider has a standard drivers license and if they have a large amount of speeding tickets, then this could work to their disadvantage, although it is very rare for insurance companies to go that far into detail.

Motorcycles in general are much more unsafe than cars, for obvious reasons. This is why most insurance companies treat them as high-risk insurance. The best way to reduce your motorcycle insurance rates is to attend a professional riding course or, depending on your experience, you could also attend an advanced riding course. Doing this will show your insurance company that you are responsible and will reduce your risk profile.

Another factor that would need to be clarified is what the motorcycle will be used for. Your insurance company will want to know whether you plan to use it for your daily commute to and from work, making it your primary means of transportation. Or will it be used purely for recreational purposes, for that Sunday cruise or weekend escape? If it will be a primary means of transport, then insurance companies will also try to establish what kind of mileage you ride and how much of the time you spend on the road.

A sales representative, for example, who spends the majority of his day on the road would require a higher premium than an office worker. The reason for this is that the sales agent would be spending a far greater time on the road, increasing his possibility of having an accident. Another reason would be that a salesman would be visiting different clients throughout the day and the bike will be parked in various locations. Some of the locations may not have secure parking lots, increasing the chances of theft.

The good thing is that because there are so many insurance companies out there, you can take your time and get quotes from everybody. Go through their service offering in detail and decide which route you would like to take. It is important that you read the fine print and make sure that while looking for the best motorcycle insurance rates you are also getting suitable coverage that will not leave you in a tight spot should you need to make a claim.

A motorcycle accident may appear small but a single mishap can be very devastating to you especially if you have not taken the proper precaution before riding on your motorcycle. There are only two things to expect during a motorcycle accident, either you escape from the wreck unhurt or you writhe in pain which is a very disastrous situation to be in. However, if you want to minimize the impact of the accident on yourself, you should take note of the more important considerations to make when thinking of your safety. A good pair of motorcycle boots will generally lessen the impact when you have a pair on during a motorcycle ride.

Wearing a helmet has been strongly advocated as the primary safety precaution when on a motorcycle ride. Yet even with this heightened awareness, some bikers tend to ignore this safety precaution which leads to higher levels of accident casualties. Because a simple and essential rule of safety is ignored big time, the other more minute ones like the wearing of other motorbike protection such as gloves and boots is also ignored in the long run. A good pair of motorcycle boots from the men's Harley Davidson boots line is equally important to wear as with the helmet.

Since the feet of the biker suffers a lot of friction from the road because of road heat and other road conditions, a sturdy motorcycle boot should be worn. This should be the primary consideration to make when selecting a motorcycle boot - that it should be solid enough to handle all the friction and heat from the road. Further, it should also be ankle high so that the rider's ankles are protected from the rotational torque and thus gives them additional support. Without a good pair of motorcycle boot, the rider will feel a lot of strain in the toe area of his feet because of the stress that is introduced to the area while in end over and end roll in the road.

Boots are very important for professional bikers and motorists alike. A lot of these enthusiast prefer wearing a style from the men's Harley Davidson boots line since the boots found here do just the job that they require for it to do. For some, motorcycle boots become an essential item. Others even make it a hobby to collect different kinds of motorcycle boots which is comparable to women and their shoes.

The essence of a pair of motorcycle boots can be felt during long rides and those rides which span very unfriendly roads as these boots help motorcyclist achieve protection and comfort at the same time. Besides these functional uses of motorcycle boots, the shoes also add a stylish statement to the overall quality of a rider's look when on a motorcycle.

So if you have plans of investing a bit of your money in motorcycle boots, make sure that you choose one which will protect your feet during long rides and is also very comfortable at that. You should also look for additional features such as the boots being water resistant and having thicker soles. These features can ultimately be seen in a pair of men's Harley Davidson boots.

Interested in motorcycles? Who can blame you! Motorcycles reek of coolness, but before you jump into the motorcycle riding scene, you need to learn the basics of the bike!

Stand Up Straight Please

It's mind boggling how they do it, but motorcycles stay upright while they are moving due to some pretty advanced physics. A still motorcycle will lean over without some sort of support. But a moving motorcycle will stay upright without much effort thanks to a couple of little things called angular momentum and torque.

To see these physics at work, imagine that you're holding a bat in your palm with the heavy end up. It's going to tip over, right? It's too unsteady. Now imagine that you're wiggling your palm in an effort to always keep it directly under the heavy end of the bat. Suddenly the bat is steady. That's how motorcycles stay upright.

Driving forward on a motorcycle thanks to the power and torque provided by the engine, the rider (or the palm in our example) is constantly moving the bike (the bat in our example) to keep it directly inline with the center of gravity (that is, the heavy end of the bat in our example).

Yes, I know I am over-simplifying with this example. But in fact, it's basically the forward momentum and the rider constantly adjusting the center of gravity that will keep the motorcycle upright.

Going, Going, Go

Regardless of the varying motorcycle designs produced over the years, most bikes include some pretty standard operating configurations.

One of those is the arrangement of elements in the steering mechanism (the handlebar). On the right handle is the throttle and twisting it backward will give the engine more gas so the machine will accelerate (as long as the brakes are off). On the left handle is the clutch lever. Pulling it in and then releasing it will enable you to change gears. Some motorcycles have automatic shifting, but they are far and few between.

The gearshift on a motorcycle is normally under the rider's left foot. Riders will squeeze the clutch lever (left hand), ease off the gas (right hand), and move the gear shift up or down (left foot). Releasing the clutch (left hand) and twisting the throttle backward (right hand) will make the motorcycle move forward.

As you can see, there's a lot of left-right hand and foot action going on here and it's going to take a bit of practice to get it right. It'll be difficult to grasp at first, but with some practice, it becomes second nature.

Stopping the Motorcycle

Now that you know how to "go," it's time to learn how to stop! Attached onto the right handle grip is the front brake lever. This lever gives the motorcycle most of the friction it needs to slow down (about 80%). The friction is caused by pads squeezing against a metal disc (or drum in older bikes) in the center of the wheel. Since this particular lever is so powerful, it can even flip a bike if it's pulled too fast especially on downward slopes.

The rear brake lever is next to the right footrest. When it's pressed, it engages the rear brake mechanism. Push it too hard and you will make your rear tire skid.

Both, the rear brake lever and the front brake lever, will eventually bring a bike to a complete (but not necessarily) controlled stop if used individually. It's the correct combination of front and rear break power that will bring a bike to a smooth stop. Constantly pumping either one however will unduly wear your brakes down and loosen their effect ahead of time.

Bikes that have linked braking systems work a little differently. With this kind of system, the rear brake works with the front break because it engages part of it. As with the more traditional types of brake systems on a motorcycle, it's the combination and simultaneous use of both brakes that creates smooth stops.

So now you know how to go and stop. But what about turning the motorcycle off in an emergency? Almost every motorcycle today has a kill switch you can use in case need to hurry up and turn the thing off for whatever reason (failing brakes, you fall off, etc.).

Is that all I need to know?

Of Course not! There's a lot more to motorcycle riding but the above should give you a good idea of the overview.

Not all motorcycles operate in the same manner so some of things will work differently -- especially if you're attempting to ride an older bike that uses a kick starter! Newer models may offer GPS systems, custom suspension, and electronic de-fogging mirrors -- things that I haven't even touched on.

Remember to always wear your protective gear and enjoy the ride!

What used to be worn exclusively by real bikers has now proliferated widely. We see it everywhere, people donning motorcycle jackets, biker boots, or leather pants. And some of them are not even authentic motorcycle riders. But that's the fad and we cannot stop it from growing more and more popular.

So what is it about motorcycle fashion that people are so crazy about?

Well, for one there's that feeling of toughness that people get from wearing motorcycle apparel. We can't blame people from feeling that way after all that is what the image of bikers have emanated since time immemorial. Men in black leather jackets, leather pants, high-cut boots riding a roaring motor bike gives us the impression of hardiness. People think that these men are tough, they're to be scared of, or they are kings of the road. The one reason why people love the motorcycle fashion, it's to duplicate that impression by wearing what bikers wear.

Another thing about motorcycle fashion is that it gives you a sense of adventure. Putting together an outfit that will make you feel like a real rider is an adventure in itself. And those that cannot afford to go bungee jumping or sky diving, they find the adventure they're looking for by being in motorcycle clothing.

Some people who love individuality and crave to stand out among the crowd prefer dressing the motorcyclist way to be unique. Among a stream of ordinary people in casual clothing, a person in shiny black boots and leather jacket is sure to catch some attention. Motorcycling gear and apparel can ultimately transform you. When people want a change for themselves or want to turn over a new leaf, they turn to giving their wardrobe a whole new look and some opt to turn theirs into motorcyclist fashion.

And some do say that the traditional and classy look one can get from motorcycle apparel is undeniable. While there are those wear it just for fun. The motorcycle fashion has grown so widely and so popular that motorcycle gear makers have to widen their selection of products to cater to the growing demands for motorcycle apparel. Harley Davidson for example now has a line of womens Harley Davidson boots and boots designed for kids.

Finally, those people who are passionate about motorcycling, who are big fans and avid spectators but just do not have the heart to try out riding themselves, resort to wearing motorcycle apparel to get their share of this sport's excitement and thrill. And while real riders may sometimes frown upon these wannabes, the important thing to remember is that everybody has the right to experience the exhilarating feeling of motorcycling, whether by racing, by cruising or simply by donning motorcycle apparel and gear.

Motorcycle riding is still one of the most thrilling rides any riders can ever have. Thus, it is still one of the leading causes of vehicular accidents. Riders should take extra precautions upon riding this one; they need to have some protected gear unto them. Another thing that they need to consider is the fact that they should drive safety, being a reckless driver is something that they need to overcome. Moreover, you need to consider bringing along with you a lot of things, yet the hard part of riding motorcycle is that unlike car and any other vehicles wherein you do have some space wherein you can put your things on, motorcycle do not have that feature. Motorcycle saddlebags on the other hand can be the answer to that problem. It can replace the fact that your motorcycles do not have that much space.

Motorcycle saddlebags can act as the storage to the things that you need to bring along with you. The good thing about this is that you can also organize your stuffs inside; you do not need to have some trouble organizing things. You can put some of those things which will be a great help unto you, for instance you can put some of those drinking water which you will for sure need as you push through your journey. You can also put some food in it and some more stuffs. You can also place some first aid things just in case something might happen. Being ready at all time can be a great help unto you and even for other people. Bring along with you things that you know can be a great help, try to check everything too before you left, so that you can be sure that all of those are already secured inside your bag. If for instance you are having some difficulty remembering all of this, you can have some list with you.

Nevertheless, motorcycle saddlebags can also be storage of some of the useful tool that you need to fix your motorcycle. It will surely be great help to you for you need not to waste time and money at the same time to go to some shop just for your motorcycle to be fixed. It will indeed be a pain in your neck, if you need to go to some shop every time there is something wrong with your motorcycle; above all taking extra precautions in everything that you do can be a great help.

To help prevent theft, many motorcycle owners invest in a motorcycle alarm system. There are many different systems available, each offering its own features. When choosing your system, there are a number of different available options that you'll want to consider. Systems can range from $15 to $200, so decide first on the options that you absolutely must have, then you can narrow the field down to systems offering those options.

Almost all systems will offer an audible siren; however, there are many other options you might not be familiar with. A flashing LED system deters potential thieves by showing the bike is alarmed. Some systems offer a battery backup system, which enables the siren to still function even if the electrical wires are cut. You can install a button that must be held down or the bike won't start. If it is hidden, a thief won't be able to start your bike.

Police tracking systems allows police computers to track your bike when stolen. It does not prevent your bike from being stolen, but it will help police locate it quickly.

Some systems offer a two-way radio system, which sends a signal to your hand-held receiver that your bike is being tampered with. If you are too far away to hear your alarm, you'll still receive notification of a problem. When you return to your bike, there is a time stamp and notification of the problem, such as whether it was bumped or the ignition tampered with. Some systems can notify you up to two miles away.

The part of a vehicle that converts liquid fuel into vapor is known as the carburetor. Carburetors are thus found in most gasoline vehicles. However, with the advancement in technology, most new vehicles do not have carburetors.

The idea and construction of a carburetor may seem very complex, but in reality, it is very simple and maintaining a motorcycle carburetor ensures that a vehicles is performing in its peak condition. The basic principle upon which a carburetor functions is atmospheric pressure, which is the pressure that is exerted on anything and is around 15 pounds per square inch (PSI). A carburetor functions by varying the pressure between the engine and the carburetor.

There is a piston in a motorcycle that goes up (for a two-stroke engine) and goes down (on a four-stroke engine), and forms low pressure inside the crankcase causing the pressure outside to be higher. Because of this, air rushes inside the carburetor until the pressure is equalized. This moving air picks up and gets mixed with vaporized fuel inside the carburetor that later burns due to the fire provided by the ignition, giving power to the vehicle.

Knowing the basic principles of how a motorcycle carburetor functions helps one to keep it well tuned and functioning to its full capacity. A well maintained carburetor burns fuel efficiently, letting out less exhaust and causing the vehicles to get better mileage.

Carburetors affect the performance of the engine as a whole. Apart from this, the other factors that effect performance are altitude, humidity, and air temperature. A drop in temperatures means the cooler air will need more fuel to burn. Warm temperature ensures full performance of a motorcycle engine.

With an increase in altitude, the air molecules decrease, causing the carburetor to need and consume more fuel. Humidity causes the same effect on the motorcycle carburetor and, thus, on its end performance.

Maintaining a motorcycle carburetor in its pristine condition is the first step toward ensuring that it runs well and is fuel efficient.

Instructions are general instructions that will guide you through removing the wheels, removing and installing tires and balancing rims.

For exact instructions please refer to your owners manual. The reason for this is that there are many different types of ways of securing the motorcycle axles, brakes and the drive systems.

Tips: The best thing to do is to lay out a clean rag next to the motorcycle and as you take off all parts simply place them in the order you took them off. Step 1: Get the bike in a position such that the rear wheel is off the ground. This can be done by purchasing a center-stand. Make sure the motorcycle is stable. Step 2: If your motorcycle has disk brakes you might have to remove the calipers first by removing the caliper bolts. Let the caliper hang off to the side. Step 3: Loosen the axle nut. But, before you do that mark the position of the adjuster so you can place the axel back in it's original position. Step 4: Remove the chain or belt by sliding the wheel forward.

Step 5: Loosen the motorcycle axle nut. Some axels may have additional support in place by the use of pinch bolts. If so, just remove them as well. Step 6: Slide the motorcycle axel out. Step 7: Make sure you keep and store in a safe contained location all the spacers, nuts, washers and bearings. They have to be placed back in the same place back on the motorcycle so the wheel does not wobble after replacement.

Removing the front motorcycle wheel is even easier than the rear.

Step 1: Remove the speedometer cable. Step 2: Remove the axle by removing the end caps on the bottom of the forks. Step 3: Once you finish step 2 the wheel should just drop to the ground. Tip: Some motorcycles might require you to remove the axel all together by sliding it out after removal of the axel bolts.

REMOVING TIRES

Remove the wheel from the bike. Deflate the tire by removing the valve stem core with the proper tool. Break the bead of the tire away from the rim using either your bead breaker or a gluing clamp. Position the wheel on a holding device such as a twenty gallon drum or tire changing stand. Pull the tire as far to one side as possible by pushing the two tire beads on the opposite side together and making them go down into the narrowest part of the rim. Pry the bead over the near edge of the rim. By inserting one of the tire irons between the near bead and the rim on the "loose" side of the tire and insert another iron under the bead three or four inches from the first and roll the bead over the edge of the rim. Pull the first iron out and move it to the other side of the second or if you have a third iron place it three to four inches from the second iron and roll more of the bead over the rim. Keep going until you work your way completely around the tire. Repeat the process to pull the other bead off the rim. Remove the inner tube if there is one. On tubeless tires remove the valve stem. Clean the bead area and the valve stem hole. Remove any rust or rubber where the bead seals. Clean the inside of the rim. Inspect the bearings, wheel etc. This is a good time to check the run in of your wheel & disk rotor. Install a new tube or valve stem depending on the type of tire you are working with. If you are working with spoke wheels install a new rim strip and check for spokes sticking through the nipples.

INSTALLING THE NEW TIRE

Lubricate both beads of the tire with wheel mounting fluid. Use mounting fluid not soap. Determine the correct rotation of the tire. Find the arrows marking on the tire that indicate which way the tire should rotate. Install the valve stem if you are working with a tubeless tire. Locate the yellow dot on the tire. This is the lightest part of the tire. The yellow spot should line up with the valve stem. Starting at the valve stem push as much of the bottom bead over the wheel as you can without using the irons. Carefully pry the rest of the bead over the edge of the rim. If you are working with a tube type tire install the tube. Put a very small amount of air in the tube. Make sure the tube isn't twisted. Repeat the operation with the other bead starting 180 degrees from the valve stem. NOTE: Be careful that you don't pinch the tube. Place your bead strap around the tire, tighten it enough to spread the bead. Add air while releasing the bead strap until the bead of the tire seats completely. I recommend about 45 PSI. Check the distance between the locator line molded into the tire and your rim, making sure that the distance between the line and the rim is even all the way around the tire. Check for a good seal with a soapy water solution.

When you purchase a new motorcycle, one of the options that you might have to look at in order to pay for it is a motorcycle loan. There are a number of things that you need to keep in mind when searching for the best possible loan for your financing needs.

Interest Rate

Finding a loan that will suite your financing needs is critical, and one aspect of that process is the interest rate that you get with your loan. The basic idea is that you want to get the lowest possible interest rate so you pay less for the loan in the long run. The interest rate that you get will depend on a number of factors, of which the most important factor being your credit score. If you have a high credit score, then you will most likely be rewarded with a lower interest rate. On the flip side if you have a low credit score, your interest rate might not be as low.

Terms

You'll want to discuss your options as far as the terms of your loan goes. If you can afford to pay the loan off more quickly, then you should consider a short loan term or period because it will cost you less when all is said in done. The faster you pay the loan off, the less interest you are going to pay.

Loan Selection

There are a number of places where you can get a motorcycle loan, so it will be in your best interest if you shop around for the lowest possible rates and the most attractive loan terms that you can possibly get. The internet is a great resource that you can use to shop for motorcycle loans because you have the ability to compare a variety of different carriers so you can see which one has the best loan package for you.

Motorcycle glasses are often seen as fashionable accessories and many do not consider the safety aspect. It is imperative that you choose a good pair of glasses that suits your helmet and also type of motorcycle. For instance, if you use a helmet that does not have a visor then it would be near impossible to ride a bike without proper eye protection, especially at high speed. There have been many reports of accidents being caused from bikers getting dust or even bugs in their eyes.

Many bike accidents can be prevented with the use of proper glasses. Apart from the risk of objects flying into your eyes, sunlight can be a huge distraction when riding a bike. There is no room for error when it comes to riding motorcycles; the slightest distraction can cost you your life. Responsible bikers know that getting proper eye wear is as important as wearing helmets. There are a number of options to choose from when selecting motorcycle glasses and it is essential that you get the right mix of function and comfort. The last thing you want to do is keep adjusting your glasses or goggles whilst trying to ride, it could cost you your life.

In some countries glasses are mandatory, as are helmets, and bikers can be fined if they fail to comply. Some people make the mistake of assuming that a visor is adequate eye wear for riding, whilst this is often correct there are some visors that do not offer any protection against sunlight and this needs to be taken in to consideration.
